Dog's Bar

Dog's Bar is a wine bar, restaurant & arts hub located at the leafy end of Acland Street, St Kilda, offering casual Italian dining. It’s the creative person’s choice of St Kilda restaurants. It’s the last bastion for artists, filmmakers, writers, actors in an ever changing St Kilda. It’s certainly one of the most infamous St Kilda restaurants and well worth a visit if you’re looking for the best value for money in St Kilda. It's a place where locals come to meet friends and make friends. We’ve designed everything we do around looking after locals’ which means visitors love it too.

There are over 150 St Kilda restaurants & bars to choose from. We believe you should choose to visit us because we are completely unique and steeped in St Kilda and Melbourne’s rich history. Our food philosophy is all about being better for you and better for the planet. The ingredients we use in our dishes are mainly delivered by the farmer or grower themselves. You get the freshness, the love, low food miles, the best quality and by eating here you’re also supporting local farmers & growers. Just remember this astonishing fact; the average restaurant ingredient travels over 5000km to reach your plate. At Dog’s Bar, the average distance travelled by all our ingredients is about 125km! That’s pretty unique.

Then there’s our ‘arts hub’. You get over 400 individual events per annum at Dog’s Bar. Whether it’s a visual arts show, film screening, live music, storytelling, cabaret, burlesque, comedy, poetry or ten minute plays and one off dramatic productions, there’s always something going on at Dog’s Bar that supports the arts. So, by visiting Dog’s Bar and supporting us, you help us continue to support the arts and provide all these arts events. That’s pretty unique.

With a wine list with over 150 wines available, 20+ always by the glass through to a cellar reserve list that has 5 vertical vintages of Penfold’s Grange, we are serious about our wine. But we’re also not wine snobs. We believe everybody should discover what they like and learn more about wine on this journey. We have a heavy focus on Victorian wines as we also love to support our local winemakers, who like their farming friends, often deliver our wine themselves. We blind taste all our wines by the glass and choose the best wine for you. Sometimes we have to taste over 150 wines! Tough job, but somebody has to do it. We focus on providing you with the highest quality wine for the price, not just taking something that’s on ‘special’ with a distributor! That’s pretty unique.

It was the very first 'bar' in Australia, opened in 1989 and according to the Liquor Licensing Commission, Dog’s Bar having to go to the High Court to obtain it’s license was the catalyst to the Government deregulating liquor licensing law, which has resulted in the creation of the ‘bar culture’ we all now enjoy. That’s pretty unique.
